Accept the Challenge: Complete Basic Training
All adult volunteers are challenged to complete basic training for their Scouting position. A fully trained leader is the number one reason a young person stays in Scouting. Read on for how you can become trained to give our youth the best possible Scouting program.
An overview of adult leader training (MS Word doc), and requirements to be a "Trained" leader is available.
Many training opportunities are held at the Blue Ridge Council's Camp White Pines or Camp Old Indian. Check out our Camps & Facilities page for a brief description of the facilities and directions.
Basic Training
It is recommended that all leaders begin their training by taking Fast Start. Cub Scout Fast Start is available on the web. For Boy Scout leaders, contact your Scoutmaster, District Executive, or Training Chairman.
To be considered Trained, any leader must take the following courses:
1. New Leader Essentials
2. Position Specific Training
3. Outdoor Leader Skills (required for Boy Scout leaders only) |
Youth Protection is also required of leaders once every three years.

Ongoing and Advanced Training
Scout Leader Roundtable
Roundtables are a form of ongoing training for all Scouting adult leaders--both Cub Scout and Boy Scout. Scout Leader Roundtable is held in each district most months of the year (except summer). Experienced Roundtable Commissioners lead the monthly program. Roundtable offers a chance for leaders to learn about upcoming council and district events and network with other leaders. In addition to the program feature of the month, programs may include topics like Youth Protection, Safe Swim Defense, Guide to Safe Scouting, Leave No Trace, and Climb On Safely.
Woodbadge
Woodbadge is a leadership training course for all adult leaders who have completed Basic Training. This 6-day course is the most advanced training offered to adult leaders in BSA programs.
BSA Online Learning Center
Boy Scout Online Learning Center - This site provides a variety of materials, from quick references to complete courses, all designed to help our members improve leadership skills and deliver a quality program.

The Generations Connection encourages Scouts to explore the positive impact of Scouting on families through a program centered around the enduring symbol of the tree.
