Why Cub Scout Uniforms and Handbooks Are Important
There is a lot of chatter about “why” we place so much emphasis on uniforms.  Uniforms serve many purposes.

  • Equality. The uniform represents a democratic ideal of equality. Children from various cultures and different economic levels wear the same uniform and cooperate as equals.
  • Identification. The uniform identifies a boy or girl as a member of the Scouting America. Badges on the uniform tell other members that they belong to their den, pack, troop and council. The uniform itself identifies a good citizen to the entire community.
  • Achievement. The uniform displays badges and other awards so the accomplishments of each Scout can be immediately recognized.
  • Commitment. Wearing a uniform is a constant reminder to each Scout of their commitment to the ideals and purposes of Scouting: duty to God, loyalty to country, and helpfulness to others.

Just as you would not send a child out to play any sport in an old pair of shorts and tee shirts, you should not send your child into Scouting without the proper uniform.  A uniform identifies a youth as part of a group and would give them a sense of belonging.
